5 Moving Tips for Seniors

April 4, 2019

Moving is hard work. All the packing and unpacking, the lifting, and of course the stress. And it can be even harder moving as a senior. There’s so much more for you to consider as you begin transitioning into a different phase of your life. You need to think about decluttering, downsizing, organizing, packing, and lifting. In order to help make moving day a little easier, we have compiled 5 moving tips for seniors.

Plan to Downsize and Declutter

As a senior you’re likely downsizing by moving into a smaller home, which means you will potentially have to part with some treasured items that may hold a lot of sentimental value to you. This is incredibly difficult for most people. While there are probably some unwanted items, most of your belongings probably evoke a memory or feeling that may make it hard to part with them.  Working with your family to help decide what you want to bring with you into your new home works for many people. But sometimes a professional move coordinator can really help you hone in on what you truly need to bring with you, what you can pass along to your children or grandchildren, and what you can just donate or get rid of.

Sort and Organize

Even if you’re not completing a long-distance move you need to make sure all of your belongings are completely organized while you pack. This ensures that you know where everything is once you reach your new home. To help with this we highly recommend using professional packing services so that you know your belongings are neatly organized and packed safely. It will also ensure that nothing gets damaged during transit, as our professional packers use the proper materials and packing techniques to ensure that your fragile ornaments and dish sets arrive safely.

Focus On One Area at a Time

When you begin packing it’s best to start in one area of the house and complete it, before moving on to another area. This keeps the packing from taking over your everyday life. We highly recommend that you begin packing in the rooms you use least (think the spare bedroom or basement) this way you can continue with your typical routine with minimal disruption.  If you do a little bit here and a little bit there all over the house, you could go weeks without actually feeling like you’re getting anywhere. It will also help you stay organized so you don’t accidentally miss anything, as well as give you a sense of accomplishment when one area of the house is completed.

Consider Your New Space

When you’re starting to pack you need to think about how your old belongings will fit in your new home. Take some measurements, look at the floor plan, and consider how your belongings are going to fit in your new space. You might find that your table is a little too large or that there’s no room for your extra chairs, or your bed and dressers don’t quite fit into your new bedroom space. This can really help you plan what to bring with you and how you’re going to lay out your new home.

Prepare for the Emotional Side

Moving is incredibly emotional for most people. It can be exciting, nerve-wracking, or even saddening. It can be difficult to leave your home of the last 30 years, but most people aren’t prepared for the overwhelming emotions the day of their move. It’s alright to feel sad when you leave one chapter of your life behind but remember, you’re also starting an exciting new part of your life!
